'Alice
Kettle, is a contemporary textile/fibre artist based in
the UK. She has established a unique area of practice, consistently
and on an unparalleled scale. She has extended the possibilities
of machine embroidery: producing works the size of tapestries,
exploiting the textures and effects made possible through
the harnessing of a mechanical process to intuitive and
creative ends. The scale of her work belies their component
parts: individual tiny stitches, which combine to form great
swathes of colour, painterly backgrounds incorporating rich
hues and metallic sheen.' Sara Roberts
She
trained as a painter, studying Fine Art at Reading University
and subsequently Textile Art at Goldsmiths College, London
where she later taught. She is currently a Research Associate
at Manchester Metropolitan University and an Honorary Fellow
at the University of Winchester. In 2006 she was voted 'Textile
Artist of the Year'.
Her
large scale stitched and figurative wall-hangings are exhibited
internationally. Her major solo show 'Mythscapes' toured
the UK between 2002 until the end of 2005. This show was
based on Homer's 'Odyssey' and was supported by the Arts
Council of Great Britain.
Her
work is represented in various public collections such as
the Crafts Council London, the Whitworth Art Gallery in
Manchester, the Direzione Beni Culturali Regione Piedmonte
in Turin, Italy. Commissions include the National Library
of Australia, the P& 0 ship 'Oriana', the Scottish High
Court in Edinburgh, Gloucester and Winchester Cathedrals
and the School of Music & Drama at Manchester University.
